My particular goal was to achieve my first dan in Jutitsu which requires high levels of fitness and strength to last a very testing four hour long grading. Statistically only one in one thousand achieve this level when taking up a martial art, so i needed all the help i could get. I needed to move to a level where i was always already fit to very fit. I forgot to mention that i am now 40 so this isn’t as simple as it was when i was in my early twenties. Personal Training with Dan’s Old Skool Conditioning Training has taken me to a level of fitness never attained before by myself. This was done by his no nonsense approach. If you don’t have the will to train hard  then forget about training with Dan. The sessions were brutal but i could feel the bennifits. Week to week i grew stronger, faster and was able to keep up with my counterparts at the Dojo, who are smaller and much younger. Probably worth mentioning i am 6′ 4″ and 18 stone. One of the chaps at the Dojo asked me if i was taking steroids, due to my marked increase in performance. I would like to add though, i hadn’t and would never take chemicals to enhance my performance. I cannot recommend Dan highly enough, his methods are not always conventional  but you get results and quickly. I did achieve my goal first time thanks to the help and guidance received from Dan. *Nigel Warwick, Age 44, Polar Expidition Training. I was booked to walk to the North Pole in April 2012, in the summertime of 2011 i decided to start looking for a Personal Trainer as i needed some help with the training and preperation for this challenge in what is an extremely hostile and physically demanding enviroment. I thought about the usual gym’s and started to look around but decided that the best thing would be to see what was out there in terms of Personal Training in my local area. Dan’s Old Skool Conditioning Training’s website came up after a search of Personal Trainers in Berkshire and what made me give him a call was his emphasis on Conditioning Training and also the fact that he didn’t come across as the usual run of the mill, factory gym type Personal Trainer. We met and Dan gave me his view of what i needed to do, which was to concentrating on building my upper body strength as well as increasing my stamina in the first instance. This all rang true as i heard it from one of the trainers working with one of the other team members and so i signed up. Dan developed a training plan for me which increased in its intensity up to Christmas 2011 and consisted of 2 weight training and Boxing Training sessions  a week, 2 trye pulls and a cross trainer session (to replicate me dragging a sled across the Arctic) as well as doing abs and press ups in the evening. By the time we got to Christmas i had changed physically and this was very noticable to friends and family. I lost 16 pounds in weight. My Doctor was very impressed as i had of course replaced fat with lean muscle. After Christmas Dan changed my Training Plan again and whilst we stuck to the basic format of the original plan there was now more emphasis on dynamic strength conditioning as the challenge is all about using your muscular strength in situations where your heart rate is running about 80 to 90% of max. 

In addition to the usual routine, this involved me making friends with a 58kg bus tyre which i beat with sledge hammers, deadlifted, dragged on chains and did Farmers Walks with. In the last two weeks of March Dan changed things up again so that the weights became one session a week and i did a full hour of circuit training and Boxing Training to challenge and test my fitness.He had already told me he thought I was ready and was maintaining me at a level and trying to reduce the risk of injury before I went. We stopped one week before I left and I headed off to the Arctic thinking I had done all I could physically in preparation for the trip of a lifetime. 
On the ice, I never once felt that I wouldn’t make it due to my physical condition. In the words of our leader, Alan Chambers MBE, we had one of the toughest trips he has led in a while. We had a lot of pressure ridges to deal with, open water, a white out and temperatures down to -35 degrees. My sledge, when weighed in at the airport by the Russians, was 57kg, the heaviest in the team (we had trained for 40kg!). I pulled it with half skins on my skis after I broke one early on and yet it was commented on that never once did I stop smiling. A friend also said that he didn’t know what training I had done but it obviously worked as I never flagged once. Alan dropped me a line after we returned to the UK saying “well done on the trip, an incredible effort and thanks for all your support and positivity on the challenge”.

Real compliments as far as I am concerned.

My time on the ice was an incredible experience and being one of less than 40 people (out of 6 billion on the planet) who reached the North Pole in 2012 is something that will stay with me forever. There are several teams who did not make it. It is a privilege to have done it but I am convinced in my own mind that one of the main reasons I made it is due to Dan and his unique approach to training. Not only did he understand better than I, the trials that I would face, but he brings something in addition to that. Essentially Dan has an incredible ability to motivate. I have never been in a “training” situation before and my suspicion was that I would find it repetitive and might lose interest. That never happened as Dan subtly altered things to avoid me getting stale or dreading a particular type of exercise. It is not only the physical training side of things either as you have to be in the right mindset to deal with this type of thing.

Dan is very good at listening and helping with the mental side of a challenge. In that way he is more of a mentor than just simply a “personal trainer”. A good example of this would be the last day of the trip when I fell heavily on bad ice and the sledge went over and down a 4ft hole, upside down and behind me. I was lying with skis tangled and the weight of the sledge pinning me to the ground. I couldn’t move. At that point, clear as day, I heard Dan say something I had heard him say when we were training; “come on, get up, you can’t give up on the ice”. I laughed and forced myself up and onwards. I have heard Dan described as

“a force of nature”. I would agree and I have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone who is serious about their training to achieve whatever their goal might be. The goals are realistic and manageable. The weekly sessions are fun, hard work, and leave me with a sense of achievement and success.
